Valerie Name Meaning

Gender: Female

Origin: French

Meaning: Strength

1. Meaning of the name "Valerie"

Valerie's name is a girl from French origin meaning "strength, health". Though it peaked in the 1960s, remaining in the Top 100 until 1988, it still doesn't sound terminally dated; the association with the word valor gives it a sense of boldness and makes it one of the special group of girl names that mean strong.

The original name Valeria, came into use in the 1890s, followed soon after by the French form Valerie, which rapidly became the more accepted form. In the 2011 werewolf update of Red Riding Hood, Red was given the name Valerie.

The name’s meaning is from the Latin word “valere,” which is all about health and strength, a good omen for a little girl. This name is French equivalent to Valeria, comes from southern Valerius, a Roman family name dating back to the Middle Ages. In modern times the name was a big favorite of parents during the 1950s and '60s.

2. Variation of the name "Valerie"

Valarie:

Borrowed from the French, Valerie is from the Latin Valerius, an old Roman family name derived from valere (to be strong, healthy).

Vallari:

The Vallari family name was found in the USA in 1920. In 1920 there were 2 Vallari families living in Massachusetts. This was 100% of all the recorded Vallari's in the USA. Massachusetts had the highest population of Vallari families in 1920.

Valery:

The Valerius clan was one of the oldest, most prominent and distinguished Roman families dating back to the sixth century B.C. Apropos to the clan’s stature in ancient Roman society, the name Valerius is derived from the Latin “valere” originally meaning “to be strong, valuable, prosperous, powerful, able”.

In later Latin the word would come to mean more succinctly “strong, courageous” (i.e., “valor”). In the United States, however, the name Valery is considered feminine; essentially a respelling of Valerie.

Internationally, though, names derived from Valerius are used on both genders. Popularity of the name was spread throughout medieval Europe (particularly France) due to the cult followings of various saints who bore the name.

For instance, St. Valerie of Limoges (present day central France) was decapitated sometime in the first three centuries A.D. for her Christian beliefs (when the Roman Empire was officially pagan).

According to legend, after she was beheaded, St. Valerie purportedly carried her own head back to her confessor (i.e., the bishop who had originally converted her). Such stories of “cephalophores” (so called saintly “head-carriers”) were quite popular in the Middle Ages, particularly in France.

So the name took hold and has persisted quite well into modern times.
