Khloe Name Meaning

Gender: Female

Origin: Greek

Meaning: Verdant And Blooming

1. Meaning of the name "Khloe"

Khloe comes from the Greek Khlóē (Χλοη) meaning “small green shoot of a plant”. Khloe is also related to the Greek “khloros” meaning “greenish-yellow” in reference to the color of a plant’s young shoot.

The origin of the Greek word “khloros” is hypothetically traced back to the Proto-Indo-European root *ghel (“to shine”); the same root where we get the English word “yellow”. In ancient Greece, Khloe was a nickname given to Demeter, apropos, the goddess of fertility, the harvest and the seasons in Greek mythology.

Khloe (spelled Chloe) is also considered a Biblical name, mentioned fleetingly in 1 Corinthians 1:11 in the context of “the House of Chloe” which brought awareness to Saint Paul regarding the dissentions at Corinth.

It was the Puritans who rediscovered these lesser known Biblical names after the Protestant Reformation. Non-conformist Christians readily bestowed such obscure names on their children as an act of modesty before the Lord (they were also demonstrating their full and in-depth knowledge of The Bible).

Today the name Chloe is enjoying a massive revival, and Khloe is coming along for the rise. The Khloe version (with a “K”) was not used in the English-speaking world until Americans adopted it five years ago. More on that below.
