In 1854, Bingham was elected the first Governor of the Republic of Michigan and was re-elected in 1856; he is among the first Republicans to be elected governor of any state.

He is known as the Governor of Michigan Farmers and the founder of Michigan State College of Agriculture (today, Michigan State University) and other educational institutions such as the State Reform School.
