Top 10 best restaurants in San Antonio

San Antonio is home to a plethora of excellent restaurants, from the best Mexican food to independently-owned restaurants run by the city's most phenomenal chefs.

From popular riverwalk restaurants to the perfect weekday brunch spot showcasing New Orleans-style cuisine, whatever you choose, your taste buds will thank you!

Biga on the Banks, located along the riverwalk, has been around for a long time and is still one of the best restaurants San Antonio has to offer. Eat and enjoy New American food with a shocking view while sipping some world-class wine. They offer a seasonal prix fixe menu with mouthwatering dishes such as lobster ravioli on arugula, lobster sauce and fennel. At Biga, you cannot go wrong!

On the flip side, Maverick is one of San Antonio's newest restaurants. This Southtown arts district gem is one of the most charming places you'll experience in the Alamo city. A Texas Brasserie with a gorgeous patio and superb service is guaranteed to deliver a wonderful dining experience from start to finish!

1. PHARM TABLE

Helpfully located across from the Tobin Center, this one of a kind cafe's slogan is "eat to live." Pharm Table's mission is to offer nourishing yet delicious foods to the community because they understand how food impacts not only the body but the mind as well. For breakfast enjoy dishes like porridge made with clove, coconut, pecans and dates or steel cut oats with honey crisp apple, raisins and sweet potato. For lunch, you can expect a mix of savory soups such as Winter Squash Moqueca, vibrant salads and bowls, like the Laab Bowl made with zucchini noodles, carrots, cherry tomatoes, mint, cabbage and chicken, if you need your protein.

2. BELLA ON HOUSTON

Owner, David Snyder, has combined his love and experience abroad with the genius of Executive Chef, Sean Fletcher, to create fresh authentic Southern European and Mediterranean dishes that are to-die-for! From the paella, with its fragrant flavors and velvety texture, to the (off-menu) Branzino, grilled to perfection with roasted garlic and grilled lemon, the cuisine is off-the-charts delicious. They take advantage of seasonal ingredients by offering dishes like the watermelon and heirloom tomato salad, but you can't go wrong with starters such as the decadent Eggplant Josephine. There isn't one item on this menu you won't savor and remember. What really stands out about Bella's is a true appreciation for quality and simplicity where the ingredients themselves are allowed to shine in a perfectly balanced symphony of flavors.

3. TEXAS DE BRAZIL

Texas de Brazil opened in 2010. While there is more than one steakhouse in San Antonio, Texas de Brazil is possibly the most luxurious one in town. Conveniently located downtown, they are within walking distance of many of the popular hotels and tourist attractions. Start your meal off with the salad bar complete with everything under the sun from their signature lobster bisque to smoked salmon, grilled pineapple, charcuterie and a rainbow of salads and specialties. However, make sure to not overdo it on the salad bar because what comes next will become the stuff of legends. Prepare yourself for an onslaught of the most mouth-watering cuts of beef, pork, chicken and lamb, from the Picanha to ribs, bacon-wrapped chicken, sausage and more. It's a meat-lovers dream come true!

4. ROSARIO'S

Rosario's, which has been around now for over 20 years, has transported itself from a local favorite to a critically-acclaimed restaurant. They have been featured in Southern Living, Texas Monthly and The New York Times, and have been listed as one of the "Top 50 Restaurants in the U.S." by Hispanic Magazine. From their Chile Relleno de Pescado (shrimp and fish stuffed poblano pepper) to their fajitas and enchiladas, there is not one thing on the menu you won't be wanting to return for again and again. They offer live music on the ends of the week and specialize in gigantic margaritas that are almost a dinner by itself!

6. Smoke Shack

When it comes to BBQ, people in San Antonio know how to throw down. Starting off as a food truck, Smoke Shack has moved up the ranks in the last four years and is now one of the most sought-after BBQ joints around. Don’t let the rustic retro vibe fool you: The restaurant serves some of the most flavorful meat you will find in the Lone Star State. Be sure to order both the pulled pork and brisket with a side of creamy mac and cheese and vinegar slaw.

7. Oscar’s Taco House

If you’re after authentic tacos, then you’ve come to the right place. This local spot serves some of the best puffy tacos you’ll likely ever have. What are puffy tacos, you ask? A famous local delicacy consisting of a corn tortilla fried to perfection that puffs up in all the right places, boasting a signature airy lightness. Think big portions, flavorful meat, cheese melted to perfection and guacamole heaven.

8. Cured

Situated in a renovated historic building in the Pearl District, Cured is the way to go if you’re looking for something in the charcuterie and pickling department. All the meats are made in-house and are aged for three months to a year—how awesome? The decor is casually elegant, which translates well during any time of the day—so feel free to come here for a casual brunch, a fancy dinner or when you’re out with friends for happy hour.

9. Bliss

If you’re looking for a more upscale dinner spot or want to impress a date, head to Bliss. The restaurant busted onto the San Antonio food scene over 20 years ago and has been impressing diners ever scene. Housed in a former gas station—a fact that adds to the eclectic vibe of the place—Bliss offers a menu that emphasizes the importance of local, seasonal ingredients coupled with a just-as-great cocktail and wine list.

10. Botika

Borrowing flavor profiles from across the globe, Botika is truly “exploring the crossroads between South Asia and South America.” Chef Geronimo Lopez’s vision is offset by an equally impressive cocktail menu that spans the gamut. Try a pisco sour and pair it with empanadas and spicy eggplant noodles—you won't be disappointed.
