Only being an hour and a half from the city, most Atlantans have been to Athens to root on the Dawgs, attend a concert or indulge in the locally brewed beer.
But as a family destination, you might not have the college town on the top of your list. However, Athens is filled with kid-friendly activities that you just can’t find in Atlanta (plus, they're super affordable). With tons of local bites, one-of-a-kind attractions and history, this bustling town is a great spot to explore with kids in tow. Read on for 20 things to do during your next day trip to Athens, Georgia.
1. Avid Bookshop
With plenty of children’s books on the shelves, a kiddie reading nook and story times, Avid Bookshop is a great spot for little bookworms. There’s also a new location (on South Lumpkin) along with the Prince Avenue location.
2. Big Dog’s on the River
Relax and kayak on the Oconee River with Big Dog’s on the River. Park and take the shuttle to the beginning of your route, then kayak down the river back to your car!

The Dawgs don’t have to win a huge game for you to ring the Victory Bell—anyone can ring the bell about anything at any time! Your kids will love pulling the rope and hearing the bell echo throughout the entire downtown and North Campus.
8. Rush Athens Trampoline Park
Let out your energy at Rush Athens Trampoline Park where you can jump, hang, bounce and race! There’s also a special toddler time on Friday and Saturday mornings.
