Here are the best things to do in Sainte Marie.

1. Piscines Naturelles d'Ambodiatafana
In the north of the city of Marie Marie, near the village of Ambodiatafana, these natural pools are separated from the Indian Ocean by a granite gate about 100m long. During each tide, the sea fills these natural basins by crashing into rocks.
The oceans are too rugged to swim there from June to September but they are completely idyllic in spring and summer (October to February). There are phenomenal panoramic views of the island from the sand dunes at the back of the beach.
2. Chez Samson
Samson trained as a chef in the best kitchens of Madagascar and he decided early on that the remote and stunning location of his restaurant would be no obstacle to fine dining. You're therefore guaranteed to be treated to the most delicious (and fresh) seafood, salads and indulgent desserts, all beautifully presented and with views of the Baie d'Ampanihy.
3. Idylle Beach
This cool restaurant is undoubtedly one of the best on the island: a fusion of European and tropical influences to create wonders like tuna or succulent steak green pepper sauce. The dessert is phenomenal too. It is the price, but a worthwhile treatment.
4. Maison Blanche
No stay on the island will be complete without Sunday at Maison Blanche: this atypical house has a rooftop terrace with 360-degree views of the island, Sainte Marie and the surrounding lagoon. It is jaw-droppingly beautiful and well worth the entry fee (or even better, a drink).
5. Crazy Lemur
Having a great cafe and bar, serving informal meals (omelets and salads, burgers and chips, etc.) on a beach slice lovely: the table is placed on the sand and under the palm.
6. Cimetière des Pirates
This is a fascinating spot from which to contemplate the history of the island. Missionaries and colonial and marine officers are also buried here, but you can clearly see the skull and crossbones on the grave of one English pirate.
The dilapidated docks used to repair the ship are visible from here, as well as the small island Île aux Forbans, where many pirates live.
7. Chez Nono
A bungalow restaurant in an empty space overlooking Baie d Summer Ammpanihy. The food here is fresh from the sea and fantastic. By fresh, we mean it has wicker baskets of live fish and mangrove crabs in the nearby creek, while the morning’s catch of shrimp is still kicking. It also organizes excursions around Baie d'Ampanihy. Call ahead to book.
8. Whale Festival
If you join the Île Sainte Marie in July, don't miss the Whale Festival. It's a huge event that celebrates the start of the humpback-whale season: there are a big parade, games, stalls, exhibitions, concerts and a conference, all to raise awareness about these enormous mammals.
9. La Terrasse
This is the place to come and get you filled with Poisson coco sauce (fish in coconut sauce) or fried squid. An outdoor setting, right by the sea and a relaxed vibe are additional attractions.
10. Pizza Mama Santa
Great wood-fired pizza and a lovely dining room. Portions are huge. Takeaway available.
