In the province of Perugia, is the ancient Roman town of Foligno.
As a bishopric, it is filled with plenty of churches and other religious institutions that have hugely influenced its history and culture, expressed heavily in the form of visual art. Here are only some of the many attractions Foligno can offer.

1. Palazzo Trinci
Formerly the residence of the Trinci family, rulers of the city from 1305 to 1439, Palazzo Trinci is now the place in which the Archaeological Museum and the Pinacoteca della Città may be found.

3. Cattedrale di San Feliciano (Foligno Cathedral)
Perhaps the most significant piece of architecture in Foligno is its very own cathedral in the heart of the city. The rest of the building has been renovated except the crypt. It also contains Antonio da Sangallo the Yonger’s 16th-century work, Chapel of the Sacrament.
4. Abbazia di Sassovivo (Abbey of Sassovivo)
The Abbey of Sassovivo is the oldest Benedictine monastery in the area which was founded in approximately 1070. Prior to being an abbey, it was a castle inhabited by the Monaldi family. Its architecture includes the typical Romanesque cloister, frescoes and a crypt.
5. Centro Italiano Arte Contemporanea (CIAC Museum)
The Center for Contemporary Art opened in 2009 on the site of what previously was the Central Post Office. Two out of the three floors of the establishment are venues for various exhibits while the third floor is dedicated for more site-specific installations. Conferences and other events are also regularly held at the ground floor.
6. Museo Naturalistico del Parco di Colfiorito (Natural History Museum of the Regional Park of Colfiorito)
Colfriorito Park holds an abundance of flora and fauna, ranging from lake and marsh vegetation, agricultural crops, to reptiles, birds and mammals. The park is protected by Ramsar’s International Convention, an organization geared towards the conservation of wetlands. Entrance is free.
7. Castello di Rasiglia (Castle of Rasiglia)
Located in the mountain village of Rasiglia in Foligno is the Castle of Rasiglia, which was used for military purposes by the nobles in the 14th and 15th centuries. Currently, only a certain section of its towers are standing today.
8. Eremo Santa Maria Giacobbe (Sanctuary of St. Mary Jacob)
A place of solace for hermits, The Sanctuary of St. Mary Jacob is nestled in one of the slopes of the glorious Mount Pale. Its stony façade blends perfectly with that of the mountain’s. it is reachable through an uphill road starting from the village of Pale, where guests would pass through the 14 Stations of the Cross.

9. Chiesa di Santa Maria Infraportas (Church of St. Mary Infraportas)
In 1087, the Church of St. Mary Infraportas was once a hospital. It overlooks the Piazza San Domenico and is designed with frescoes by artists such as Pierantonio and Bernardino Mezzastris. Aside from the church proper, there is also a chapel on the side named after the Assunta that was built far earlier than the rest of the building.
10. Santuario della Madonna del Pianto (Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Fallen)
For pilgrims and devotees of Mary, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Fallen is a church you should definitely not miss. It is found in an alley along Piazza Giacomini Ercole, which is reportedly difficult to find unless you pay really close attention or ask around.
It may not seem like it on the outside, but guests usually leave in awe of its majestic interior and altar. Other nearby religious institutions that you could also pay a visit to like Monastero Clarisse Santa Caterina, Casa ‘Beata Angelina’ and Parrochia di S. Pietro Apostolo In S. Eraclio di Foligno are only within walking distance.
