Almere is located on the east coast of Markemeer on the water from Amsterdam and is a planned city.

Split into 6 districts – Almere Stad, Almere Buiten, Almere Pampus, Almere Haven, Almere Hout, and Almere Poort, the city has a distinct structure and organization. To cope with the growing population of the Netherlands after WW2, plans for Almere were developed and its first house was created in 1976, and it officially became a municipality in 1984. The newest city in the Netherlands, Almere is located on the reclaimed land from Lake IJsselmeer. 1. Oostvaardersplassen

Covering over 56km, the park serves as a successful example of rewilding. Located between Almere and Lelystad, Oostvaardersplassen stretches across the Markemeer wetland.

Here you will find many reed beds that are home to many species of birds including the Great Egret, Eurasian Bittern and the Great Cormorant. Furthermore, the land is home to many herbivores including Red Deer, Konik Ponies, and Cattle.

4. Forteiland Pampus

Not many people will realize that there is a fort in the middle of Ijmeer seen in between Almere and Amsterdam, but yes, and it is called Forteiland Pampus. From the small town of Muiden, just a 15-minute drive from Almere Poort, you can catch a ferry to Pampus Island to see the amazing Forteiland Pampus.

Built-in 1895 on an artificial island, the fortress has two 35-caliber guns mounted hydraulically and also an electric lift to bring artillery shells into the gun.

An extremely interesting and fun place to visit, De Kemphaan is a farm exhibition and store located east of Almere Haven in Waterlandsebos.

Here, you'll find a range of different activities for kids and adults like Monkey Rescue, local restaurants and products you can buy including locally brewed beer! On Saturday mornings, an organic market is held and here you can buy a variety of beautiful organic products and enjoy the taste of fresh orange juice.

If markets and restaurants are not your things, you can simply relax on the outdoor grounds or walk through the trails.


6. Escaping Almere

One of the few museums in Almere, Veiligheidsmuseum offers a great opportunity for children to have fun and learn a lot about fire trucks and fire service. 10. De Stadsboerderij

This city farm is a great place to find some local produce and to see farmers working. The Stadsboerderij farm is managed in an environmentally friendly manner and provides an inviting green space in Almere.

Visitors can look at the farm, see the stables and many horses and cattle reside there, chat with the farmers or browse through the selection of good homemade products.
