Top 10 things to do in Altamura

Altamura (/ˌæltəˈmʊərə/; Italian: [ˌaltaˈmuːra]) is a city and comune of Apulia, in southern Italy. As of 2016, its population was 70,562.

1. Cattedrale Di Altamura

We visited the Church late in the afternoon when someone was cleaning and we couldn't visit the missionary. But we were able to see the big, permanent Christmas scene in a walkway - the interesting thing is that the bambino has been stolen many times and the current incumbent is only a few years old.

2. Piazza Duomo

This town seems to have a lot of locals who have made a good change and make you feel how the Italians here blend in with their days. Surprised to see that even cafes are closed here for lunch!

3. L'uomo Di Altamura

I was also hoping to see the dinosaur footprints and the prehistoric man but they are not in this museum, despite the misleading dinosaur decorations at the front entrance. The entrance is free, and we were shown a video about the discovery of the prehistoric man and the dinosaur footprints.

Upon questioning the museum staff, we realized that the area of the dinosaur footprints is closed to visitors and the prehistoric man, we think, is still in his cave.

From the video, the skeletal remains of the archaic man were very much buried (embedded) in the stalagmites and stalactites of the cave, and the archeologists had to crawl through narrow openings and crevices to get to the remains.

But it's still interesting to learn about the history behind the town. Hopefully, in the near future, some of these rare findings will be open to the public.

4. Teatro Mercadante Altamura

If you are in the area and want to spend a night out after dinner here, where you are looking. This small but beautiful theater has been renovated and reopened after more than 20 years. It's been built at the end of the XIX century with the community money help and now is back to light thanks to private contribution.

If you do not speak Italian, you can still visit and enjoy the evening with an opera or concert. To not be missed!

5. Il Pulo

The place is just incredibly beautiful if you arrived here on my review you already know what is all about so I won't talk about the car crater, but I rather spend some words on how to reach it!

Unfortunately, roads conditions are quite bad and for what I know there is not yet a guided tour of the area, what I surely know is that there are neither maintenance nor cleaning routine works, so benches and tables are dismissed and there is quite a lot of waste in the fields surrounded the area.

Forget all together, about toilettes, bars, restaurants, a car park, you need to bring water with you. Nature did a great job but local politicians need to do their homework. If you manage how to reach it and you're not too fussy about the rest, this attraction is definitively one of the best sites around.

6. Centro Storico Di Altamura

While Altamura may not be on many people's lists, we find this walled town quite charming. There were lots of little shops and restaurants. One of our favorites was a bakery where we were able to try a piece of the bread that Altamura is famous for. Delicious!! Very beautiful churches and historical buildings.

7. Museo Archeologico Statale

This is nothing out of the ordinary, or exceptional in any way, but it is a pleasant way to spend an hour if you are in Altamura with time on your hands.

8. I Claustri Di Altamura

Special urban structures document the past coexistence of various religious communities. They include a narrow alley leading to an open space where houses lookout. The central courtyard serves as a meeting place for social life and also a place to work or raise animals.

Don't miss the architectural details of stone and iron stairs and balconies, masks, crests and drawings adorn these openings.

9. La Cantina Frrud - Museo del Vino, Altamura

La Cantina Frrud - Museo del Vino is tucked in Altamura. Take the guesswork out of planning an Altamura vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

10. Mudima - Museo Diocesano Matronei Altamura

Stop in Altamura to eat delicious sandwiches and stroll around the city. We could never imagine visiting such a wonder. There is so much to admire and even as part of it, I will use a lot of space. I suggest the visit and surprise waiting for you.
