3. Musée Basque et de l'Histoire de Bayonne
If you're still getting to grips with the complex culture and history of the Basque region, this excellent ethnographic museum is a great place to start.
It is crammed with artifacts, from traditional costumes, artworks and archaeological ephemera to reconstructing a typical Basque text (home). Labeling is only available in French, Spanish and Basque - but English flyers are available.
4. Cazenave
The window displays at this renowned chocolate shop are practically an art-form. Inside there are 12 grades of plaquettes (chocolate bars) to try, each with a color-coded wrapper, plus bonbons chocolates (individual chocolates), which you can buy individually or as a sampler box.
There's also a lovely old-fashioned tearoom, locally famous for its chocolate mousseux (frothy hot chocolate).
5. Les Halles
Bayonne's covered market is a beauty, standing right by the river and filled with gifts of the Basque Country. After it closes, there are a couple of corner bars where you can try some pintxos (Basque tapas) or tuck into oysters from up the coast in Arcachon.
6. Bistrot Itsaski
This convivial stone-walled dining room is managed ably by warm proprietors who circulate making sure all guests are happy. And they are happy with the generous portions of their creative Basque cuisine, focusing on seafood, ham, and lamb.
7. Daranatz
Founded in Bayonne in 1890, this premium chocolate sells its chocolates with irresistible flavors: plain and milk, of course, but also impregnated with vanilla, cinnamon, and coffee, coconut, and exotic spices.
8. Musée Bonnat-Helleu
Bayonne's venerable art museum is expanding, giving it more modern, spacious galleries - doubling its size. It is slated to reopen in mid- to late 2019.
9. Fêtes de Bayonne
A five-day extravaganza of food, drink, dance and fireworks.
10. Rue des Faures
This beautiful street used to be the home of the city's bayonet smiths, but now it is being recreated as a manual neighborhood.
It's a lovely place to browse, with galleries, bookshops, a vintage-sewing-machine restorer, a luthier (stringed instrument builder or repairer), a linen shop and one of the last remaining makhila makers – the wooden staffs traditionally carried by Basque shepherds.
