Top 10 things to do in Groningen

Groningen was once one of the most powerful cities in the Netherlands and is currently the capital of the province of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands.

With a population of about 200,000 people, it is one of the largest cities in the country. The Petesrug area where Groningen was located witnessed some form of settlement for many years, as early as 3950 BC, however, the city did not flourish until the 13th century. During this period it became a large trade center and had a city wall. During the 1600s the University of Groningen was built and the city became increasingly focused around education. Like many other Dutch cities, Groningen was devastated during WW2 but many of its iconic buildings remained intact.
