Nola's name is a Gaelic girl's name, Latin origin meaning "white shoulder". Nola, a name with a sensual, haunting quality, was used for the heroine much sought after in Spike Lee's 1986 breakthrough film, She's Gotta Have It, and again by Woody Allen in Match Point.

However, once the silver chain was broken, the swans immediately transformed into old people and withered away to their deaths (before being sent to heaven). So goes the legend of the “fair-shouldered” Fionnuala.

The name Fionnuala was quite common in medieval Ireland, although the more modern form of Finola has become pretty rare. Nola is a common nickname.
