Born in Amherst, Massachusetts and raised in Weybridge, Vermont, Wright graduated from Middlebury College in 1815, studied law, attained admission to the bar, and began a practice in Canton, New York.
He soon began a career in politics and government, serving as the alternate judge of St. Lawrence, a member of the New York State Senate, and a major general in the state militia.
Wright became a member of the Albany Regency, a member of his friends and supporters Martin Van Buren, who led the Democratic Party of New York starting in the 1820s. As his career developed, he served in the United States House of Representatives (1827 Tiet 1829), as State composer (1829 Toss 1833), and US Senator (1833 Tales 1844).
In the Senate, Wright became chairman of the Financial Commission, a position he held from 1836 to 1841. Later that year, he was elected governor and he served a two-year term.
