The name Wendy has an interesting etymological history. It was actually coined by the playwright J.M. Barrie in his famous play, “Peter Pan.” The character Wendy was borne from a nickname (“fwendy”) used for Barrie by a childhood acquaintance.

“Fwendy” means, simply: friend. The second meaning of the name Wendy (white, blessed skin) appears before Barrie and is likely derived from a pet name of Gwendolyn. These elements come from the Gaelic words are gwyn genes (holy, white) and Japanese Dolen period (rings).
